A Brooklyn Bridge visit - a Kid Friendly Family Vacations Favorite | |
| The Brooklyn Bridge is one of the completely free New York City Attractions. The view from the bridge offers some of the most majestic views of New York City.... | |
Our family visited the bridge on one of our New York City family vacations.
Since we were staying in the lower Manhattan area, we were able to take advantage of the free downtown shuttle, the Downtown Connection (click for a map and info on the New York City Downtown Connection).
We took the Downtown Connection to the South Street Seaport stop. The walk to the bridge from there was not very far. We stopped by the shops at the South Street Seaport - the photo above was taken from there with the Bridge in the background.
The entrance to the bridge is near City Hall in downtown New York City. Once at the Bridge area, you are free to walk or bicycle across the bridge. Walkers and bikers share the same walkway in the center of the bridge. The bridge begins well before it spans the water..... actually, We thought it would take forever before we finally reached the water.

The walkway on the bridge widens as you approach the arches. There are plaques explaining the history of the bridge around this widened area. Our photo of the children on The Bridge at left was taken at the first arch of the bridge from the Manhattan entrance. The view of New York City in the background is tremendous.
Our family enjoyed spending the morning on the Brooklyn Bridge. Spending time together walking and exploring on the bridge was a great addition to our family vacations.

Our Tips
Take time to walk around the downtown
area of New York City at the bridge entrance. City Hall Park is at the
base of the bridge.
Chinatown is just a few blocks
north of the Bridge entrance in New York City... go ahead and walk over there for a look around.
If the day is
hot, and if you are visiting New York City in the summer, it WILL BE HOT!, take
along some water for your walk. Water can be purchased all along the area
leading up to the bridge, but once on the bridge, you are out of luck.
