Our family has spent time on the Isle of Palms, a barrier island which is 20 minutes from Charleston. There are mostly single family homes available for rent on the Isle of Palms, but it is also home to the Wild Dunes Resort.
The Beach at the Isle of Palms is a very quiet and relaxing family beach. There are small stores and restaurants all along the streets. The Isle of Palms is very un-commercialized. This atmosphere can be a little boring for children in the year 2007 when they think that they need to be entertained every minute of the day.... but this beach family vacation can be one of the best with a couple of day trips into Charleston.

Another Charleston SC Beach that we have visited is Folly Beach. Folly Beach is located about 15 miles south of Charleston and is known as Charleston's truly original beach playground. We have never spent more than a few hours at Folly Beach - we make trips there for a swim every now and then during family vacations to Charleston. This beach is more commercialized than Isle of Palms, so there is more going on that children might enjoy.
