Disneyland-Money saving tips

The worst part about taking the kids to Disneyland is the cost. Buying tickets are obviously a huge price, and thank goodness their age gives the kids a discount, but what about the extras, food, refreshments, and worst of all, souvenirs. Nothing can ruin a day faster than a child who throws a fit over some stupid Mickey doll they will forget about days later. They mope around and refuse to have fun on the teacup ride because all they want is that doll.

We, as parents, can put our foot down on this behavior, but that doesn't seem to stop that sour look on their face that can ruin a picture. Here are some tips for surviving a day a Disneyland or any theme park without tantrums or an empty wallet.

1) It is important to talk about cost with your children before entering the park. Kids should know the value of a dollar, what it can buy, and what just can't be afforded. Don't feel like a bad parent for refusing to buy something. It is important to let them know that they are not allowed to get any toys and their good behavior will hinge on riding special rides or even getting a special treat.

2) Mickey bucks: a sly form of bribery, create Mickey Bucks at home before the trip. Have them represent a dollar value, if they are old enough to understand addition and subtraction this should be a great way to utilize that. When they are behaving well, give them a Mickey Buck, when they are behaving poorly, threaten to take their earned bucks away (if you tell them you are going to take it away if they continue to do something, you must take them away if they don't stop. If you don't stick to your words then they will continue to misbehave because they will see you as weak.)

3) Before your trip go to the store, like Target or Wal-Mart, and buy a couple "souvenirs" some stuffed Mickeys, a princess crown, etc. These are usually a fraction of the price of the toys in the park. Give it to them beforehand, or promise them a treat in the hotel or car if they behave well.

4) Don't forget to pack a bag full of water, snacks, candy and glow sticks for the evening parade. Bringing these things in will save grubby hands from driving you crazy in the stores.

Good Luck!
