Fort Pulaski National Monument - Military Architecture and history just mile from Historic SavannahHistory abounds all over Savannah - this fort is right outside the town... |

Fort Pulaski National Monument is located approximately 15 miles east of Savannah Georgia. This fort is one of the most extraordinary examples of military architecture that we have come across on our family vacations. Fort Pulaski offers daily interpretive programs including guided tours and musket firings.
The battle for Fort Pulaski in April 1862 marked a turning point in military history. It featured the first significant use of rifled cannons in combat. Within 30 hours Union forces breeched the 7-foot-thick walls of Fort Pulaski signaling the end of masonry fortifications. The Union troops then occupied Fort Pulaski from April, 1862 until the end of the Civil War.

The moat that surrounds the fort varies in width from 30 to 48 feet, and has an average depth of eight feet. Alligators, turtles, and small marine life inhabit the moat. There are drawbridges located around the fort to allow entrance. The view to the right is the demilune moat that is connected to the main moat around the fort. The demilune of this fort contain 4 powder magazines and passageways connecting gun emplacements. The photo at left shows the powder magazine entrances on the demilune of Fort Pulaski. This photo is of an area that is just a little to the left of the photo above. The drawbridge entrance to the fort is just past the powder magazines and sits across the demilune moat.

This National Park offers many programs and tour options displaying some of the greatest points in American History. I would suggest allowing your family vacation stop at Fort Pulaski.
