Fun Family Travel Games and Tips
by anonymous
There are lots of family travel games that we play in the car before and after the kids get bored with their videos and hand-held games.
The most obvious is I spy....."I spy with my little eye something that it....and then you provide an adjective - tall, red, bright, etc].
My kids also like to look at the trucks and figure out if they are or are not sleeper trucks (you see if there is a window above the driver's seat). Then, of course, we see who can find ten sleeper trucks first.
For the older kids we have laminated a map from where we are going to our destination. We also give them an erasable marker to use on the map. That way, the kids can follow along and see what is along the way and help determine stops, etc.
For our toddler, we put together a "busy bag". In the bag we have lots of "stuff," including crayons, markers, paper, cards, glue sticks, foam, felt, cotton balls, etc. He could then put together a little masterpiece of his own.
Needless to say, we have little tables for each of the kids so they can do their work.
And let's not forget the snacks. I like to bring things that the kids can do/make themselves, which also keeps them busy for at least a little bit. I bring crackers and a jar of peanut butter so they can spread it out themselves (plastic knife, of course). Even lunch meat with a loaf of bread - not premade, so they have something to do.
Finally, we play "Ask A Question" and we all take turns asking questions (and we try to avoid yes/no questions to encourage longer answers.
