Even though the city of San Francisco is only about seven miles by seven miles, it can be an overwhelming and expensive city to visit, especially with kids. However, there are some free or low-cost options that will help keep the kids entertained without draining the ATM.... making a kid friendly San Francisco trip a reality!

San Francisco Art Institute (800 Chestnut): Located in Russian Hill, it is free to explore this campus and view the galleries and student artwork. If you visit on a weekday, be sure to have lunch in the school’s café – it has one of the best views of Alcatraz in the city.

Pet Central in Chinatown (660 Broadway): While a pet store may not be something you typically visit while on vacation, be sure to visit this hidden gem. This is a huge pet store that specializes in fish. One could spend an hour here without buying anything.

Sutro Baths: The ruins of the once elaborate Sutro Baths are now part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. Free to visit, the ruins are fascinating for adults and kids alike – just be sure to hold on to the little ones.

Camera Obscura (1096 Point Lobos Ave): Located next to Sutro Baths in the Cliff House complex, the Camera Obscura is a ‘giant camera’ that visitors enter to see images projected from outside. This remnant of the past is both entertaining and educational.

Historic Street Cars (Market Street): While everyone knows about San Francisco’s iconic cable cars, many may be surprised to know that San Francisco operates a large collection of historic street cars from around the world. The streetcars operate daily and run all the way from Fisherman’s Wharf to the Castro district.
