Kid Friendly Coney Island has been a favorite destination for family vacations for many years. Located in Brooklyn, NY, it is a not-for-profit corporation based on the neighborhood’s amusement park area. Its goal is to preserve American pop culture through exhibits and performances. It is the home of the Astroland Amusement Park and the New York Aquarium. There is a 3-mile boardwalk leading up to Brighton Beach, which is a favorite tourist spot.
What to do:
- Visit the Coney Island Museum. Right now the museum is open only on Saturdays and Sundays. Your family can avail of a walking tour and learn a bit of history about the place. On Saturday nights, you can catch a film featured by the Coney Island Film Society. The museum can also be rented for private functions. People have actually gotten married there!
- Go for a ride on the Cyclone, a wooden rollercoaster built in 1927 in Astroland.
- While the kids play at the amusement park, the parents can catch a burlesque show. For the summer only, the Burlesque on the Beach program revives notorious “girlie revues” that were really hot back in the day.
Go on a tour with Captain Bob. Highlights include the old bathhouses, the boardwalk, restaurants and the history of the “hotdog.” The tour costs $12 per person.- Visit the aquarium. The New York Aquarium is the only one in the city and part of the largest network of wildlife parks in the country. Under the Wildlife Conservation Society, it aims to save wildlife around the world.

- Footprints Café. A family-owned Caribbean restaurant serving a fusion of traditional island fare, seafood and French and Italian cuisines.
- Gargiulo’s Restaurant. For decades, this family restaurant has been the venue of weddings and other social functions.
- Denny’s Ice Cream. Cap off your trip to Kid Friendly Coney Island with some soft-serve banana and pistachio ice cream.
