New York City Broadway Shows are a "MUST DO" while in NYC |
We did not originally plan to see one of the New York City Broadway Shows during our August 2006 family vacations. The prices are quite a bit higher than we pay to see a play in our hometown in Northeast Tennessee, and then multiply that by 6, and it is quite an extravagance... so it was just not on the agenda.
All I can say is that I am glad that our girls talked me into going to see one of the plays. Amanda saw a billboard that announced that Hailey Duff was starring in the New York City Broadway Show Hairspray. Once she realized that, all I heard was - I really want to see Hairspray Mom... please..... so here is our adventure.....

I normally plan everything to the Nth degree, so this was out of the ordinary for us... but, the Broadway Ticket Center in Times Square on Broadway between 46th and 47th streets (click here for a map) sells tickets for all plays - same day tickets are available at a reduced rate.... up to 50% off. So, the girls and I skidded up to the ticket counter at 7:45 PM (play begins at 8:00 PM). I ask if there are seats available for tonight's showing of Hairspray.... just so happens that there were - we bought the tickets, and ran the 4 blocks to the theater, and fell into our box seats (we were so close to the stage that Amanda could almost reach out and touch Hailey Duff). The play was absolutely Fantastic.... we loved it.... it was a great addition to our family vacations in New York City..

The girls loved the play so much that their souvenir from the entire New York
City trip was Hairspray t-shirts. They are wearing the shirts the next
day in this photo.
Our family vacation friends were with us on this trip too. Their boys were interested in seeing the Monty Python play... Spamalot. The option that they chose to see the play was to visit the theater box office directly and purchase Standing Room Only tickets. These tickets were only $20. So, their entire family of 5 went to the play for $100.

Our Tips
Take the time to choose the play that
you would like to see. Visit the Broadway Ticket Center to see if it is possible to get
same day tickets. The Ticket Center opens at 2:00 PM, and is very crowded
early in the day.
Try visiting the box office to see if
there are any special deals for the day that you want to see the New York City
Broadway Shows.
