The Beautiful water surrounding the Island of St Thomas is a deeper blue than you will see farther north in the Caribbean. As you can tell, I just love the water of the Caribbean! I could honestly spend an entire day just sitting - looking at the water. St Thomas Family Vacations can give you that unique opportunity! Our stop in St Thomas was a day trip stopover while on family cruises, but we were able to take quite a fascinating tour around the beautiful Island of St Thomas!
Our Cruise Ship, The Carnival Glory, docked at Havensight, in the town of Charlotte Amalie. Just like any Cruise Port Terminal area, there is quite a hubbub of activity, but if you give yourself a little time, you can work out a tour with one of the taxi drivers. At Havensight, you will find the Havensight Mall, home to more than 50 shops, many of which are outposts of Charlotte Amalie's better-known boutiques.
St Thomas Family Vacations - Around the Island Tour
The highlight of our visit to the island of St Thomas was the Island tour that we took. After leaving the ship, we went directly to the taxi / tour bus area close to the dock. There were many taxi drivers and tour guides offering island tours, and rides into town.
The option that we chose was a tour guide who did a complete round trip around the island with a stop at one of three beaches. Those who wanted to swim or snorkel could stay at the beach for about 2 1/2 hours, and ride back to the ship with the next tour group. The option worked well with us since we were very interested in spending some time at one of the beaches of St Thomas.
Our tour started form Havensight, and climbed up to Mountain Top. Mountain Top offers one of the best views in all of the Caribbean - a major draw for tourists. The observation deck area offers a view of over 20 islands, and cays, rainforests and rainbows high atop the volcanic peaks, as well as a fantastic view of downtown Charlotte Amalie and the Cruise Dock. Mountain Top offers a duty-free shopping area as well. One of the things that makes Mountain Top famous is their Banana Daiquiri. Mountain Top also offers a virgin version of this famous concoction.
After leaving Mountain Top, our St Thomas family vacations tour continued around the island stopping at several points for photo opportunities. Then we were given the choice of beaches to visit. The main island of St Thomas has three beaches, Magen's Bay, known for its beauty and calm waters; Coki Beach, home of Coki Beach, home of Coral World Ocean Park (a 4.5-acre marine park whose highlight is an underwater observatory with 360-degree views of fish and other sea creatures -- the only way to see fish without getting wet); and Coki Beach, home of Sapphire Beach, which faces Coki Beach, home of St. John, and offers every conceivable type of water sport equipment for rent. Our tour guide took us to Sapphire Beach for the afternoon, and we had a wonderful time. Snorkel equipment was rented for $5 for 1 hour, and the water was as beautiful as you can imagine!
St Thomas Skyride to Paradise Point
Upon our return to Havensight, we took in the Coki Beach, home of St Thomas Skyride to Coki Beach, home of Paradise Point. The skyride is a tram ride to 700 ft above the city of Charlotte Amalie. We were pretty exhausted after our island tour, so we did not really enjoy Paradise point as much as we could have. After arriving at the top of the Skyride, you can spend as much time as you like at Paradise Point. There is a restaurant and a bar, as well as a bird show featured three times daily.
