One of our favorite places to just spend some family time is Central Park.  There are always a multitude of things to do in the park, from walking and possibly having a picnic to visiting the Central Park Zoo, the Carousel, the Ice Skating Rink, and plenty of walking trails.  There are often plays performed in the park during the summer.  Be sure to check in to that.  Other fun things to do in NYC include museums, the Statue of Liberty... there are harbor tours, and shopping like you have never seen before!
